KML to CSV Converter
What is KML?
KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is an XML-based file format used to display geographic data in Earth browsers such as Google Earth, Google Maps, and Google Maps Mobile. The format was originally developed for use with Keyhole Earth Viewer, which was acquired by Google in 2004 and later renamed Google Earth.
While KML is excellent for visualizing geographic data in Google Earth and other mapping applications, it can be challenging to analyze the data without specialized tools. Our converter transforms KML into simple CSV spreadsheets that you can open with Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet software.
Why Convert KML to CSV?
- Data Analysis: Perform statistical analysis on geographic data using familiar spreadsheet tools
- Accessibility: Work with your Google Earth data without specialized GIS software
- Integration: Import location data into business intelligence tools, databases, or other applications
- Sharing: Share geospatial data with colleagues who don't have Google Earth or GIS expertise
- Editing: Make bulk edits to geographic data in a spreadsheet before converting back to KML
KML Files
KML files come in two formats:
- .kml - Standard XML-based KML files
- .kmz - Compressed KML files (essentially a zip file containing KML files and potentially other assets)
Our converter only handles `.kml` files. For KMZ files, you will need to extract the KML file first. You can do this by renaming the `.kmz` file to `.zip` and extracting it using any zip extraction tool. Once you have the KML file, you can upload it to our converter.
KML Features
KML supports various geographic elements, including:
- Placemarks - Points of interest with locations and custom icons
- Paths - Lines representing routes or boundaries
- Polygons - Shapes representing areas like property boundaries or zones
- Ground Overlays - Images overlaid on the map
- Network Links - Links to other KML files on the web
- Folders - Organizational structures for KML elements
Our converter extracts all relevant geographic data and attributes from these elements and organizes them into a structured CSV format.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the converter support KMZ files with embedded images?
Yes, the converter can process KMZ files with embedded images. While the images themselves aren't included in the CSV (as CSV is a text-only format), the converter will extract any textual metadata about the images, such as file names, paths, and any associated descriptions or attributes.
How are time-based KML features handled?
KML supports time-based data for animations and historical tracking. Our converter preserves all temporal information in dedicated CSV columns, including timestamps, time spans, and time intervals. This allows you to analyze time-series data and temporal patterns in your spreadsheet application.
How do I create a KML file?
You can create KML files using Google Earth by placing markers, drawing paths or polygons, and saving your work. Google Maps also allows you to export custom maps as KML. Many GIS tools like QGIS and ArcGIS support KML export. Additionally, you can convert from other formats to KML using our various conversion tools before converting to CSV if needed.
